Wyndham Libraries have announced an innovative and exciting free workshop that will spark the interest of aspiring scientists.
The ‘Girls for Science’ workshop will run on Wednesday, 12 April from 1pm to 3pm at the Julia Gillard Library.
It is a scientific program that is led by and explores the achievement of women in STEM.
The workshop is open to all genders that have an interest in science and are aged between 8-12 and who live in Wyndham.
Two inspiring young Wyndham women, Samyuktha Sriganesh and Srushti Shah, are the founders of Girls for Science Melbourne who run the workshops.
Samyuktha and Srushti will step participants through a workshop on chromatography, a process for separating components of mixtures, a field greatly advanced by Eva Smolkova-Keulemansová.
They are passionate about encouraging primary school students – particularly girls – into the science field and their workshops are aimed at highlighting the achievements and discoveries of women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Samyuktha and Srushti grew up in Wyndham and have both completed their Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne. Srushti is now studying her Juris Doctor in the hopes of becoming a lawyer while Samyuktha is studying her honours at the Foley Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in a project focusing on Multiple Sclerosis
‘Girls for Science’ have successfully delivered a number of free workshops at the Julia Gillard Library in Tarneit, where young people have discovered the work of female scientists through guided experiments.
Wyndham City’s Learning City portfolio holder Cr Jasmine Hill said: “These innovative and exciting workshops will spark interest and start to nurture and develop an interest in STEM from a young age.”
“It is heartening to see an increase in females participating in the science field and that’s why the ‘Girls for Science’ workshops are terrific because they encourage and inspire girls to participate.”
