Wyndham City won the Supporting Tennis - Local Government Award at the annual Victorian Tennis Awards this week.

The award is presented to participating Local Governments for being the ‘most engaged with, and supportive of, tennis in their community.’

Wyndham Mayor, Councillor Susan McIntyre said it was a well earned award, that recognised the efforts of Council, Tennis Victoria’s support and community clubs’ encouragement of the sport.

“Those committees and coaches who work hard to develop their tennis clubs ensure the infrastructure Wyndham City delivers is well used and the programs supported by Tennis Victoria are well attended,” she said.

“We have collaborated with Tennis Victoria on a range of tennis boosting programs and initiatives such as the successful establishment of the Truganina Tennis Club at the new Alcock Road Reserve,” she said.

“In addition to opening tennis facilities at the $19.6 million Alcock Road Reserve, Truganina and the $15.95 million Wesbster Street Reserve, Point Cook in 2022/23, Wyndham City is actively engaging in the planning and delivery of significant tennis specific projects.”

These include:

  • Undertaking a tender process for the construction of 6 x courts at the new Polly Parade Reserve, Tarneit
  • Collaborating with Sport and Recreation Victoria and Dane Nebel Tennis Academy to upgrade three courts with energy efficient LED lights at Saltwater Reserve, Point Cook
  • Undertaking a tender process to refurbish and resurface three courts at Wootten Road Reserve, Tarneit
  • Design for redevelopment of selected courts at Galvin Park Tennis, Werribee

Wyndham City’s Active City portfolio holder, Councillor Peter Maynard said the Wyndham Sports Strategy identified that tennis was a priority sport for residents.

“As a dynamic and growing municipality, Wyndham City continues to plan and develop sustainable tennis facilities and infrastructure that align with Tennis Victoria’s Thriving Tennis Communities framework,” he said.

“We also provide 18 freely accessible courts across Wyndham including many fitted with book-a-court-technology, we offer fun tennis activities at major events and holiday activities with the support of Tennis Victoria.”

“It’s great to see how much residents enjoy our tennis programs and facilities, which contributes to the overall wellbeing of our community.”
