Wyndham City is calling for ideas to help shape Woodville, in Hoppers Crossing, into a vibrant 20-minute neighbourhood.
The Woodville Neighbourhood Activity Centre is one of the oldest in Wyndham. It currently comprises a local shopping centre, two schools, open spaces, recreation facilities and a kindergarten.
A Place Plan is being developed for Woodville, with the aim of boosting the local economy and creating better connections to shops, facilities and services. Woodville residents and visitors are asked to share what they value about their activity centre, and what can be improved.
The ideas shared will be used to create a Place Plan that aims to enhance Woodville as a 20-minute neighbourhood. 20-minute neighbourhoods aim to provide for most daily needs within 20 minutes of home, with access to local transport options, shops, workplaces, and recreation.
The development of a Woodville Place Plan will build upon recent improvements to the area. Wyndham City Mayor Cr Susan McIntyre said the project will use the Victorian Government’s Plan Melbourne principles to enhance Woodville as a 20-minute neighbourhood.
“We will be looking for ways to make Woodville an even better place to live and work. That may be by improving the movement network, enhancing public spaces, or supporting the local economy,” she said.
“The Plan will be developed based on community feedback so we encourage the community to participate.
“We will aim to offer high-quality public open spaces, provide services and destinations that support locals, while also facilitating access to quality public transport that connects people to jobs and services.”
Wyndham’s City Design portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said it was important to update neighbourhoods to make them relevant to the needs of today’s community.
“Woodville was designed along the principles of the late 1970s and 1980s,” Cr Gilligan said.
“We’re looking to enhance Woodville utilising today’s more advanced understanding of place making and 20-minute neighbourhoods.”
“We’re also interested in understanding the community’s support of housing and population densities that would increase the vibrancy of Woodville, support local businesses and provide the community with an increased range of housing choice.”
