Four Wyndham sporting facilities are now officially lit, with two more lighting projects either underway or being designed.
Lighting has been installed and is now operational at Saltwater Reserve tennis courts 5-8 in Point Cook, Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve oval 1 and Price Reserve in Werribee South.
These works allow tenant clubs – including tennis academy DNTA, Williams Landing Soccer Club and Werribee Districts Football Club – to grow their membership base and train or play after dark.
Meanwhile, work on an LED lighting upgrade at Galvin Park Oval 1 in Werribee is also complete.
Wyndham City Active City portfolio holder, Councillor Peter Maynard, said the lighting additions also allowed for increased general community use.
“Wyndham City is committed to making it easier for our sporting clubs and the general community to get active after dark,” Cr Maynard said.
“These works help Wyndham residents be more active, more often and give sporting clubs the opportunity to train and play at night.”
“Importantly, all four sports reserves are using energy-efficient LED lighting, which is better for the environment and helps to keep operational costs down.”
The lighting projects at Saltwater Reserve and Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve were jointly funded by Wyndham City and the Victorian Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, with DNTA also contributing to the lights at Saltwater Reserve.
The Galvin Park lighting upgrade has been jointly funded by Wyndham City, the Victorian Government’s Country Football and Netball Program and tenant club Werribee Centrals Sports and Youth Club.
The lighting at Price Reserve was fully funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
“This is a great example of Council working with all levels of government and our sporting clubs to give the community the infrastructure they need,” Cr Maynard said.
Speaking about the Price Reserve lighting, Federal Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, added: “I know first-hand the amazing work Werribee Districts Football Club junior program does from the time my sons played there, so I’m really proud this funding will support their juniors at Price Reserve.”
Meanwhile, two further lighting projects – at Goddard Street Reserve ovals 1 and 2 in Tarneit and Mainview Boulevard Reserve in Truganina – are currently in the design stage, as well as a scoreboard for Mainview Boulevard Reserve and Wooten Road Reserve.
These projects were part of the Victorian Government’s election commitments and are expected to be delivered in 2024.
