Wyndham City is calling for feedback on the draft Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy 2023, which aims to ensure housing is well located and designed to meet the community’s future needs.

The 2023 Strategy prioritises the development of new homes in areas that are close to existing and proposed services and transport.

It also sets out an action plan that will support Council in planning for greater housing diversity, high quality design and enhancement of the character of Wyndham’s neighbourhoods.

Wyndham City Mayor, Councillor Susan McIntyre, welcomed the strategy.

“Wyndham is growing at a rapid pace and over the next 20 years our population is expected to grow by more than 200,000 residents,” she said.

“To accommodate our growing future population, we need to carefully plan to ensure that new housing is well located and well designed to meet the needs of our diverse community.”

The 2023 Strategy identifies three broad categories of housing change – limited change with restraints on accommodating increased housing, incremental change near activity centres and future residential areas and substantial change near transport hubs.

“Each category plays a different role in accommodating future housing growth and diversity,” Cr McIntyre said.

“It also identifies neighbourhood character precincts that will guide new development in a way that responds to the preferred character.”
