Wyndham City has commissioned a major new street art mural at Hoppers Junction Precinct in support of businesses during Covid recovery and to improve public spaces.
The Hoppers Junction Mural will be a large-scale work situated on the exterior wall opposite to Powell Drive reserve.
Internationally renowned street artist, Julian Clavijo will begin work on the mural next week, with artwork expected to be complete by mid-March.
The artist’s colourful realist paintings feature across Melbourne and explore themes of childhood joy, curiosity and innocence.
The Hoppers Junction Precinct Mural is part of Wyndham City’s Covid-recovery strategy, that includes outdoor dining experiences, parklets and even trials of shared pathways.
Activations and events such as the Summer Symphony and West End Experience are all part of collaborative initiatives to support businesses and jobs in our City and Town Centres and to create vibrant, liveable places for our community.
These activations, including others such as parklets, temporary cycle routes and pop-up parks at Point Cook, Williams Landing and Soho Village are all ways for the community and businesses to trial and test ideas and concepts.
Feedback, data and evidence collected during these trials and pilots helps us to guide longer term planning, design and creative use of our spaces.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Adele Hegedich said the mural would give a new look and feel to a familiar landmark and provide another incentive for people to support local businesses.
“Council has previously done murals as part of placemaking and always try to work closely with the businesses when we do so,” said Cr Hegedich.
“Public Art is an important part of creating vibrant, liveable and prosperous places.”

Local business owner, Aimee Helu of Jock and Mack, supported the Council initiative, and said people would be drawn to the joyful mural illustration.
“The mural design which has been curated for the area will become the statement piece of Hoppers Junction,” Ms Helu said.
“When I saw the design, I couldn't help but feel the joy that is radiated through the little girl's face.”
