Wyndham City will again be participating in a 16 day campaign against gender-based violence.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that begins on Saturday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until Sunday 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Jennie Barrera, said violence against women and sexual harassment should never be tolerated and each of us have a responsibility to call out violent acts.

“Calling out gender inequality begins in our friendship groups, in our family, at our workplace and in our community,” Cr Barrera said.

“Getting help and support for women who you believe may be in abusive relationships is also a critical step towards ending gender-based violence.”

“Council is proud to be a part of the campaign this year and has training sessions and activities that we hope the community can join us for.”

“Engaging in our training sessions and viewing our photography exhibition are just some ways the Wyndham Community can support the campaign.”

In recognition of International Day of People with a Disability and 16 Days of Activism, Wyndham City Council will be running two events that will assist in raising awareness of the impact of Family Violence of women with a disability.

On Tuesday 28 November there is an opportunity to hear from an award-winning author, writer and academic researcher in crime, justice and legal studies and on Wednesday 6 December there is a Lunch and Learn training session to raise awareness of Family Violence impact on women with a disability from women that are experts by experience.

Wyndham Community Centres will be exhibiting a series of portraits of community leaders who are backing the campaign, including Musarrat Sayed from the Pulse with Purpose group that meets at Dianella Community Centre.

Musarrat said that participating in the campaign is important to her because all women deserve to be safe from violence and treated with respect.

Photographer David Mullins has created the portraits in his studio and the work will be displayed in our Community Centres during the campaign.
