An Introduction to Wyndham Council Managed Community Centres
For many years, Wyndham City’s Community Centres have developed the capacity and capabilities of residents and are known for being safe and inclusive hubs of local information.
The Council Officers, also known as the Neighbourhood Hubs Unit (Hubs Team), who manage the spaces, are there to help people learn more about Council’s services and access support and resources that further their goals and aspirations. They are recognised for working collaboratively with the community to create safe and welcoming places for everyone.
Each year, the Hubs Team facilitate the Annual EOI process in the search for services and programs that align with Council’s vision and strategic direction.
Successful applicants who meet the Centre Priorities are given the opportunity to enter into a 12-month hire agreement to a Community Centre shared space and is overseen by the Neighbourhood Hubs Unit.
Hirers and user groups who are allocated space will have the opportunity to deliver their programs and activities directly to the public with the support of the Hubs Team, together the aspire to meet the needs of residents and contribute to community wellness.
Through a competitive process, the Council-managed community centres seek passionate and community-focused programs and services that strongly align with the priorities of each Council-managed community centre.
Why do people go to Community Centres?
Community Centres are welcoming spaces where people come together to:
- Connect with others
- Learn new skills
- Create and share ideas
- Celebrate culture and community
- Access support and services
Running a program from a Community Centre may provide your program exposure to the visitors and participants of programs.
Wyndham is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse areas in Victoria. Nearly half of the people living here were born overseas, with many coming from India, the Philippines, China, New Zealand and England. Families, young people, seniors, and new residents all use our centres.
Each week, thousands of people visit Wyndham’s Community Centres to join programs, get support, or simply connect with others.
What Programs Can You Run?
Wyndham Community Centres host many different programs. You can run:
- Dance and fitness classes
- Tutoring and homework clubs
- Art and craft workshops
- Language and cultural groups
- Health and wellbeing sessions
- Playgroups and youth activities
- Seniors’ social groups
Programs are for all ages — babies, children, young people, adults, senior residents. Every centre welcomes new ideas and supports activities that help people connect and grow.
What Do Council Officers Do at Community Centres?
Council Officers — also known as the Neighbourhood Hubs team — work in Wyndham’s Community Centres to support the community. Their role is to:
- Welcome and connect with local residents
- Help people run programs and activities
- Make sure the centres are safe, inclusive and well-used
- Listen to what the community needs
- Build partnerships with local groups and organisations
They are the friendly faces you’ll see at the centres, helping things run smoothly and making sure everyone feels welcome.
Community-led Priorities
Community Centres are unique for many reasons, including their facilities and design. However, what truly makes each community centre special is the people who use it. Council understand how important it is for community to strengthen community as it creates greater outcomes for all, therefore, we prioritise Community Voice and provide opportunities to understand needs and goals from residents.
The Neighbourhood Hubs team support the residents to make a list of priorities, that helps to determine the Community Centre Priorities each year, which are shared with EOI applicants.
If you are an activity provider, understanding the needs of your centre’s community is essential. When your program aligns with these local priorities, it will naturally attract participants and make a meaningful difference.
Not all Community Centres will have the same priorities and can often be similar. However, some centres focus on family wellbeing, others on youth engagement, education, or social connection. You can ask our team for help to understand what matters most at the centre closest to you
What else is at our Centres?
Some centres also offer extra services:
Libraries – Four centres (Tarneit, Point Cook, Manor Lakes) are connected to libraries. These offer books, free events, and activities for children, youth and adults 3.
Maternal & Child Health (MCH) – Free health checks and support for families with children from birth to school age. MCH nurses help with sleep, feeding, development and more 4.
Kindergartens – Many centres have kindergartens where children learn, play and get ready for school in a safe and caring environment 4.
Why Are Community Centres Low-Cost to Hire?
Wyndham City wants everyone to have access to programs that support learning, health, and connection. That’s why our Community Centres are low-cost to hire. We want to make it easier for local people and groups to run programs that benefit the community.
If you run a program in our centres, it should be:
- Free, or
- Low-cost, or
- Discounted for people who need it
This helps make sure that everyone — from all walks of life — can join in and feel welcome. We believe that when programs are affordable, more people can take part, and the whole community benefits.
