Register a food business premises

If you have a business that prepares or sells any food or drink, you will need to register with Wyndham City Council. 

To start your food business, you will need to: 

Once you have applied for registration, one of our officers will review your application. If required, we may then be in touch to: 

  • request extra information 
  • book an initial site inspection. 

Important: If the main purpose of your business is to sell, transport or prepare meat or seafood, you will need to register with PrimeSafe instead of Wyndham City Council. 

If the main purpose of your business is to manufacture, distribute or carry dairy, you will need to register with Dairy Food Safety Victoria instead of Wyndham City Council. 

If your business is a food truck, market stall, or temporary food premises, you will need to register with us via FoodTrader.

Check if you need a planning or building permit

You may need to get a planning permit or a building permit before you can register your food business. 

This applies to both home-based businesses and businesses that operate from a commercial premises. 

Planning permits

You may need to get a planning permit to change the use of your premises. For more information, see Applying for a planning permit.  

Building permits

If you are planning to do any building works to your premises, you will need to get a building permit. This includes: 

  • commercial kitchen fitouts 
  • renovations 
  • converting a garage into a food preparation space.

Make sure your premises is suitable

To register your food business, you will need to make sure your premises or home is suitable for the kind of food business you have. 

Read the design and construction guidelines

Prepare a floor plan

When you submit your registration form, you will need to supply us with a floor plan of your premises. This might have different requirements to any plans you have to provide for your planning or building permit. 

Your plan should be drawn to scale with dimensions and include: 

  • information about the intended use of each room or area in the premises 
  • location and type of all fittings and fixtures, furniture, shelving and benches
  • surface finishes of walls, floors, ceilings, benches, shelves, splashbacks 
  • location and use of all sinks and basins. 

Get advice on your floor plan

You can choose to submit your plan to us to get written advice on how to make sure your layout will meet the requirements of the Food Act 1984. 

You can request this service for an additional fee when you apply for your registration. 

Prepare a Food Safety Program

A Food Safety Program (FSP) is a document that sets out how your business prepares and handles food in a safe way. It is required for all Class 1 businesses and for some Class 2 businesses. 

If you are using a non-standard FSP, you will need to also provide a Certificate of Adequacy from a Third-Party Auditor as part of your registration.

Get all the documents you need and apply

To register a food business, you will need to give us: 

  • a floor plan showing every part of your premises 
  • a trade waste consent letter from Greater Western Water 
  • your food safety program (if needed) 
  • a food safety supervisor certificate
  • an ASIC company extract dated within six months (if you are applying on behalf of a company) 
  • a description of your business including information about your food and how you make it.

One of our officers will review your application and get in touch if you need to give us any more information. 

Prepare for an inspection

Once your application has been submitted, one of our environmental health officers will contact you to arrange a time to inspect your premises. 

If your premises is suitable at inspection, you will be issued a certificate of registration under the Food Act 1984.
