The exhibition Angry Older Women emerges from the artist’s experience of reaching middle age as a woman in Australia. It reflects the physical transformations, the questioning of life choices, and the shifting emotional landscape marked by moments of anxiety, rage, and introspection. Alongside this is a growing awareness of how society can respond with dismissal, or worse, a quiet sense of invisibility.

Women in this stage of life are often labelled as ‘angry.’ While the artist acknowledges there is truth in that at times, the work pushes beyond this narrow framing. Through the exhibition, she reveals a broader spectrum of experience, inviting viewers to encounter not only anger, but also joy, beauty, and a touch of playfulness woven throughout.

About the artist

An American Australian self-taught artist, Erika creates whimsical works filled with joy and hope. For her, this is a deliberate act of defiance against the ugliness of the world, grounded in a belief that beauty holds the power to transform.

Her practice is defined by flowers, vibrant colours, and a touch of intentional messiness. Inspired by artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Kushner, and Sheree Smith, Erika’s work reflects what delights her most, inviting others into that same sense of wonder and lightness.
