Preserving Multicultural Women's Traditional Ecological Knowledge

In July, Multicultural Women Victoria Inc (MWV) launched a new project, Preserving Migrant and Refugee Women's Traditional Knowledge 2025.

This project was a creative plant-based journey that celebrated and preserved multicultural women’s traditional knowledge of plants.

Through creative workshops, cultural exchanges, and expert-led sessions in naturopathy and women’s health, women explored how traditional plant knowledge could support wellbeing and identity. They learnt ethical foraging practices, joined in nature-based excursions, and created textile artworks that reflected their stories and wisdom.

MWV textile artist, Sofie Dieu, collaborated with Wyndham City and Monash University and fostered community connection, cultural pride, and a deeper relationship with the natural world.

The free program involved 20 multicultural women living in Wyndham who came together to explore the power of plants in food, medicine, and ceremonies through creativity and culture.

The project was held at Penrose Promenade Community Centre, where women shared stories, explored traditional practices, and connected through creative expression in a safe and welcoming space.

No prior experience was needed — only each woman’s voice, heritage, and creative spirit. The project will run until November 2025.

This project was funded by the Multicultural Grassroots Initiative – Australian Federal Government and Wyndham City Council.
