New Exhibition: Remnants: What Remains and What Flows

Wyndham Art Gallery is excited to announce a new exhibition Remnants: What Remains and What Flows, a compelling group exhibition curated by local Congolese-born, Melbourne-based artist and curator Wani Toaishara opening on Saturday 18 July 2026.

The exhibition brings together seven internationally recognised artists: Ja’Tovia Gary, Tace Stevens, Latai Taumoepeau, The Unbound Collective, Sancintya Mohini Simpson, Idil Abdullahi, and Anu Kumar to explore the past and the present.

Wyndham is proud to support exhibitions that challenge, inspire and celebrate the diversity of stories within our city.

Remnants: What Remains and What Flows explores how memory, care and transformation are experienced within legacies shaped by colonial violence.

This free exhibition invites audiences into a space with unsettled archives, where what went before, the yesteryear and present, here and now converge, and where more equitable futures can be imagined. Moving between absence and presence, lived experience and imagined possibility, the art works encourage viewers to reflect on their own relationships with home, memory, and the stories we tell to understand who we are and where we come from.

The exhibition highlights the power of contemporary art to spark reflection and connection across communities and brings together powerful voices and perspectives that invite the community to engage with complex histories and shared futures and imagine justice beyond traditional narratives.

Spanning film, photography, performance, sound and ceramics, the exhibition uses soil, water and the body as material and metaphor conduits through which fractured histories are revisited, reimagined and renewed.

The opening event on Saturday 25 July 2026 from 3pm to 5pm will feature a spoken word performance by Zaynab Farah and entertainment by Dj Blu Canary.

A dedicated Auslan tour on Saturday 8 August from 10am to 11am is designed for deaf and hard of hearing audiences and provides accessible insight into the exhibition.

Join the curator, wani toaishara, for a curator talk and tour and get to know more about Remnants: What Remains and What Flows on Saturday 8 August from 12noon to 1pm. This tour will have Swahili translation by Hamile Ibrahim.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and on weekends Saturday and Sunday form until 10am to 3pm until Sunday 18 October 2026.
