Wyndham City is proud to reaffirm its commitment to support the LGBTQIA+ community, when we mark IDAHOBIT on Thursday 14 May.
Although IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, is officially held on Sunday 17 May, we will be holding a flag raising ceremony mid-week, and hearing from Dr Yves Rees award-winning writer, historian and podcaster who writes on transgender history and politics.
Dr Rees is also a frequent contributor to ABC radio and has appeared on ABC TV’s The Drum and Queerstralia, as well as Channel 10’s The Project.
This free event will be held at the Wyndham Civic Centre on Thursday 14 May from 10am and light refreshments will be served following the event.
IDAHOBIT is a day of significance that shines a spotlight on defending the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and continually working towards the reduction of discrimination.
IDAHOBIT is internationally acknowledged on Sunday 17 May. This date commemorates the anniversary the World Health Organisation’s removal of homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990, which until then was classified globally as a mental illness.
As recently as 1997 it was illegal in some parts of Australia to be gay and until nine years ago, same-sex marriage was not recognised in our country – milestones such as IDAHOBIT show how far we have come and how much further we need to go to remove discrimination and promote inclusion.
Wyndham residents are encouraged to stand strong for inclusion and LGBTQIA+ rights, working towards building equality in our community and around the world.
Registrations for this event are essential. For more information and to register, go to www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/idahobit
