Join us at the RAAF Museum as we lift the curtain on the fascinating history of the birthplace of Australian military aviation.

RAAF cultural historian Squadron Leader Steve Campbell-Wright will share the history of one of Wyndham’s most-famous landmarks, RAAF Base Point Cook, and its unique and interesting place in our local history.

The History Talk will talk place in the atmospheric Technology Hangar of the RAAF Museum, where visitors will be surrounded by iconic and beautifully restored RAAF heritage aircraft.

Afterwards, join us for a special bus tour of some of the heritage areas of the base and lift the curtain on the birthplace of Australian military aviation, which has been a proud part of the Point Cook community for than a century.

This event is intended for adults and restricted to Wyndham City Council residents.

Event bookings and schedule

Bookings are compulsory for this event and tickets are limited.

The RAAF Museum is located at RAAF Base Point Cook. Please see sections below for important information about how to get here, Base entry and ID requirements, parking and facilities.

We recommend planning to arrive a little early to allow time for Base access and parking. The RAAF Base Point Cook History Talk will start promptly at 10.30am. The planned schedule for the Talk and Tour is as follows:

10.15am - RAAF Museum open for History Talk and Bus Tour event attendees

10.30am - RAAF Base Point Cook History Talk commences

11.30am - Talk concludes

11.45am - Bus Tour* commences from RAAF Museum. Attendees who do not wish to attend the Bus Tour component are very welcome to tour the RAAF Museum

12.30pm (approx) - Bus Tour concludes at RAAF Museum

1.00pm - Event concludes and RAAF Museum closes

*If weather and other conditions permit, visitors may be invited to alight the bus at specific locations, however most locations will be viewed as a windscreen tour from the bus. Please note that mini-buses utilised may not be wheelchair accessible. Please contact the RAAF Museum team (see Contacts info below) to discuss your needs prior to booking.

 

Entry conditions and important information

  • Please note this event is for Wyndham City Council residents and Wyndham Libraries patrons attending in a private capacity and is closed to the general public on this day. The Museum is regularly open to the public on Thursdays and Sundays and also Wednesdays during Victorian school holidays, and tickets for other days can be booked here.
  • This event is intended for adults and is restricted to attendees over 12 years of age. All visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Current, valid photo ID is required for each visitor over 16 years of age. See our FAQ for examples of accepted ID.
  • For safety and security purposes, visitors must stay within the RAAF Museum buildings and precinct, and follow all instructions from friendly RAAF Museum staff when visiting heritage locations.
  • Photography and videography for personal use is permitted inside RAAF Museum buildings and of static aircraft and artefacts on display. Bodycams are prohibited at RAAF Base Point Cook and at all RAAF Museum areas.
  • Photography or videography for media, commercial or promotional use is not permitted without specific prior approval.
  • Pets, alcohol, drones, laser pointers and weapons are all prohibited on base. Registered assistance dogs are permitted.

 

Arrival

When you arrive at RAAF Base Point Cook for the event, please present your Eventbrite booking confirmation and photographic ID for all visitors over 16 years of age to our guards at the front gate. They will check your details and direct you to the RAAF Museum. Car parking attendants will direct you to free outdoor parking upon arrival.

 

Getting to RAAF Base Point Cook

There is no public transport which runs directly to RAAF Base Point Cook. The nearest bus stop is around 2km away and the nearest train station 7.6km away. If visitors arrive by taxi or ride share service, passengers will be required to alight at the front gate and travel to the Museum will then need to be on foot from the security gate entrance, approximately 400m away. Visitors in wheelchairs who arrive in wheelchair compatible/modified taxis will be directed to the Museum to alight, however these taxis will need to depart immediately after. Bicycles are accepted and bicycle racks are available at the RAAF Museum. In all cases, please remember to bring your photo ID.

 

Facilities

A mobile coffee van visits RAAF Museum and RAAF Base Point Cook at select times, and may attend during this event, however there are no cafes nor restaurants on base. There are shops and restaurants within a short driving distance. There is an undercover picnic area and small grassed areas available for visitors' use. BBQs are not permitted.

Water bottles are permitted in the Museum, but we do ask that no other food or drink is consumed indoors or in buses.

 

Touring the Museum

The RAAF Museum showcases more than 100 years of Air Force history, at the birthplace of military aviation in Australia. It's a special place, with a special story, and we love sharing that story with our visitors. All families attending the RAAF Base Point Cook History Talk and Bus Tour event are very welcome to tour all our open display hangars after the Talk/Tour until closing time (1.00pm on Friday 24 April), or feel free to book a return visit on another open day.

 

Accessibility

All display hangars and areas in the RAAF Museum are wheelchair accessible, however mini-buses utilised for the Bus Tour may not be wheelchair compatible. Please contact the RAAF Museum directly to discuss your specific needs prior to booking for the Bus Tour component of this event.
