Wyndham City’s Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards program recognises the outstanding contributions of Wyndham City residents who, through hard work and dedication, have significantly contributed to the community.
These individuals help make Wyndham a better place.
They offer outstanding service each day and enable our communities to be stronger because of their extraordinary efforts.
Service areas might include education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and well-being of a community.
So go on, let’s celebrate those unsung heroes!
The award-winners will be announced during Wyndham City’s free, community Australia Day program in 2023.
Nominations close 12pm, 31 October 2022.
Citizen of the Year
This is awarded to someone making an extraordinary contribution to the community and may recognise outstanding service over a number of years.
To be eligible, the person must be a Wyndham resident and an Australian citizen aged 26 or above as at 26 January 2023.
Young Citizen of the Year
This is awarded to a young person who is making a real difference in their community, potentially over multiple years.
To be eligible, the person must be a Wyndham resident and an Australian Citizen aged between 16 and 25 years as at 26 January 2023.
Award Criteria and Assessment of Nominations
A judging panel will evaluate nominees against the following four criteria and shortlist up to 6 nominees for each award:
- High Quality & Impactful – the nominee's actions or contributions have been ‘above and beyond’ and have resulted in an outstanding impact in the community.
- Positive Role Model - the nominee is respectful and open in their interactions with others and can be considered a positive role model.
- Outstanding Commitment – the nominee has shown an outstanding commitment to their local community through their length of service and/or the level of their involvement.
- Overcomes Challenges - the nominee has demonstrated a commitment and been resourceful in their approach to dealing with complexities and challenges.
Shortlisted nominees will be contacted by Council on 15 November 2022 and will be required to undergo a national police check (at Council’s cost) if they are aged over 18 and may be asked to participate in an interview between 21 November and 2 December 2022. The judging panel will also conduct reference checks for shortlisted nominees during this period.
The judging panel will then determine the winners of each award and all nominees will be notified of the outcome no later than 5:00pm on 12 December 2022. Winners will be publicly announced during Wyndham City’s free, community Australia Day program on 26 January 2023.
Wyndham 2023 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards Terms and Conditions
By submitting a nomination to the Wyndham 2023 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Award (‘awards’), you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
These terms and conditions should be read with any relevant award information, including your nomination form and any information published by Council regarding the awards.
1.1 To nominate a person for the awards, you must be over 18 years of age and must submit a properly completed nomination form via Council’s website between 9:00am on 1 October 2022 and 12:00pm on 31 October 2022. Nominations which are incomplete or do not comply with these terms and conditions are not valid and will not be accepted.
1.2 You must obtain the consent of the person you are nominating for the awards prior to submitting a nomination. If thenominee is aged under 18 years of age, you must have the consent of the nominee’s parent or legal guardian to submit the nomination. Evidence of this consent must be provided to Council on request.
1.3 You must have the consent of your referees to submit their contact details with your nomination. Evidence of this consent must be provided to Council on request.
1.4 You agree to immediately notify Council of any changes to your nomination, including the request to withdraw your nomination, by emailing email@example.com.
2.1 To be eligible for an award the nominee must be:
a) an Australian citizen;
b) aged over 16 years of age;
c) Wyndham resident.
2.2 To be eligible for the Young Citizen of the Year Award, the nominee must be aged between 16 and 25 as at 26 January 2023.
2.3 To be eligible for the Citizen of the Year Award, the nominee must be aged 26 years or above as at 26 January 2023.
2.4 Council staff, Councillors, the award judges (Michael Lim, Frances Martin and Katrina Caris) and their immediate family members are ineligible to submit a nomination or be nominated for an award.
2.5 Previous winners of Wyndham’s Citizen of the Year Awards are ineligible to be nominated for an award.
3.1 The judging panel will assess all nominations between 1-14 November 2022 in accordance with the assessment criteria published on Council’s website. Up to 6 nominees will be shortlisted for each award category.
3.2 Shortlisted nominees who are aged over 18 agree to undergo a national police check at Council’s cost, and may be asked to participate in an interview between 21 November and 2 December 2022. Interviews may be conducted online (e.g. via Zoom or Microsoft Teams) if they cannot be conducted in person.
3.3 Subject to a satisfactory police check and interview (if conducted), the judging panel will contact the referees in each nominee’s nomination form to undertake a reference check.
3.4 On completion of the police and reference checks and interviews (if conducted), the judging panel will determine the winners of each award category.
3.5 Nominees will be notified of the outcome of their nomination no later than 5:00pm on 12 December 2022.
3.6 The winner of each award category will be announced during Wyndham City’s community Australia Day program on 26 January 2023, and may subsequently be announced on Council’s websites and social media pages.
3.7 Each winner will receive a trophy, pin, certificate and flowers, valued at approximately $600. Award winners may receive invitations to Council events in 2023, such as Citizenship Ceremonies, as determined appropriate by Council.
4.1 Council may disqualify a nomination where Council reasonably believes that these terms and conditions have been breached, or that false, inaccurate or misleading information has been provided in the nomination or otherwise.
4.2 Notwithstanding any other provision of these terms and conditions, Council expressly reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the awards and/or amend these terms and conditions at any time.
5.1 You must not canvass, lobby or otherwise attempt to influence Councillors, Council staff or award judges in relation to your nomination.
5.2 Nothing in these terms and conditions or in the conduct of the parties creates a relationship of agency, partnership, employer and employee or joint venture.
5.3 Council accepts no responsibility for late, lost, incomplete, invalid or corrupt nominations.
5.4 Council’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
