Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife Campaign

Wyndham City Libraries are running the “Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife” campaign, throughout May, in partnership with Public Libraries Victoria, Zoos Victoria and the RSPCA.

Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife focuses on education and supporting cat owners to care for their pet cats. Keeping cats safe at home improves their welfare and helps protect local birdlife and wildlife.

Point Cook and Manor Lakes Libraries have a life size cat enclosure on display in May which shows how cats can keep active and have fun and be safe in an enclosed space! There will also be a range of cat themed children’s activities across all Wyndham libraries to encourage responsible cat ownership.

Free roaming pet cats can be at significant risk of harm, including wandering onto roads, traffic accidents, injury, and eating substances that can cause disease. Keeping cats safe is good for cats and helps protect the welfare of local wildlife as approximately 46% of Australian endangered animal species are found in cities and towns. Roaming cats can chase birds and wildlife and cause injury and distress.

Wyndham City existing cat curfew from 10pm until 6am is being extended to 24-hour containment this year as part of the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026 – 2029, which took effect from 1 January 2026.

The introduction of the 24-hour Cat Containment will include a phased education period, to help owners learn about how to keep their cats happy and safe at home, with enforcement of the new hours not commencing until after this learning period in December 2026.

Enforcement of the current evening 10pm to 6pm curfew will remain in place during this time.
