Mark your calendars: IDAHOBIT is nearly here, and Wyndham City is proud to reaffirm its commitment to support the LGBTQIA+ community.

Council will mark IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, with a special event featuring the world’s first LGBTQIA+ and First Nations Bachelorette Brooke Blurton as the keynote speaker.

This free event will be held at the Wyndham Civic Centre on Thursday 15 May from 10am and will include a flag raising ceremony and light refreshments.

Wyndham City Mayor, Councillor Mia Shaw, said she welcomes everyone to go rainbow and join Wyndham City's International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination event to learn, listen and stand in support of the LGBTQIA+ community to ensure a more inclusive Wyndham for all people.

“IDAHOBIT celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally and is also a day to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ rights and the work still needed to be done to combat discrimination,” Cr Shaw said.

“Unfortunately, the LGBTQIA+ community continues to experience discrimination based on their sexuality, gender identity or intersex status – and it is important we create a culture where everyone feels safe and welcome.”

“I am also thrilled that Brooke Blurton will be our special guest speaker. Beyond her work as a youth worker, Brooke is an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness, Indigenous rights, and LGBTQIA+ visibility. I look forward to hearing her speak on the day.”

Registrations for this event are essential. For more information and to register, go to www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/idahobit
