Wyndham City is proud to announce Ruth Tangbau as the One Wyndham recipient for December.

Ruth is an amazing and inspiring leader and is the first person to complete a tertiary education in the Kachin community in Wyndham. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science last year, she is currently completing a Masters of Teaching.

Ruth has achieved outstanding academic success, receiving many accolades and scholarships including a Western Chances Scholarship, Science Start-Up Scholarship, Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship, Trinity Residential College Scholarship and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards scholarship.

Arriving in Australia as a Kachin Refugee in 2015, she has overcome many challenges to achieve a university degree.

Ruth encourages young people to see education as a pathway and is especially inspirational and encourages young women to follow their dreams of studying science and stem. Ruth has delivered and presented numerous Science and Stem  educational programs, workshops and experiments in both metropolitan and regional low socio economic schools.

She is community minded and is dedicated to volunteering to improve the situation and plight of others, particularly vulnerable communities. Advocating and raising awareness of victims of child sexual abuse.

Ruth’s ultimate dream it to teach in Myanmar and educate and mentor young people affected by the military coup.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Jennie Barrera said: “Ruth has a positive attitude and is passionate about helping others. Whether it is volunteering for humanitarian organizations, planting trees for national tree day, raising funds for Myanmar, providing social support at Sunshine hospital for people with cancer or mentoring and teacher young people from refugee backgrounds.”

“She is an exemplary role model for young people from refugee backgrounds and shows how with determination and hard work you can make a difference and make your dreams come true.”

“Wyndham City thanks and appreciates the important contribution Ruth has made and continues to make in Wyndham.”

One Wyndham recipients are residents aged between 12 to 25 who positively contribute to the Wyndham community and are role models to other young people.

Each month Council selects a Wyndham resident to be awarded the ‘Young Person of the Month’.

Winners are awarded a $300 gift voucher of their choice and other prizes.
