NRW

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

NRW runs from 27 May – 3 June each year to recall two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey:

  • May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when over 90 per cent of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and recognise them in the national census.
  • On June 3, 1992, the High Court of Australia’s Mabo decision overturned the notion of ‘terra nullius’ and legally recognised the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ to their country prior to colonisation.  This recognition paved the way for the Native Title system.

The 2023 theme is BE A VOICE FOR GENERATIONS and encourages everyone to be a voice for reconciliation in our everyday lives.

For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generations future, let’s choose to create a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

For more information, see Reconciliation Australia and Reconciliation Victoria.

Participation, development and support of NRW activities is a priority in our Draft Reconciliation Action Plan 2023 - 2025, currently being finalised.
