Delama (to embrace)

Artist: Chloe Chatterton (Wadawurrung)

Wadawurrung Country has a diverse landscape, encompassing mountains, rivers and the sea. This series of artworks embraces the beauty of Country and the vibrant community it nurtures. It also celebrates the coming together of the community and its diverse populations and generations to foster an environment of learning, care and connection among one another. Delama symbolises layers of Country and the collective responsibility we share to help heal and care for it.

The reception area features eucalypt leaves which are important for smoking ceremonies, symbolising welcoming, healing and cleansing. Community Room 1 takes on a playful design, symbolising childhood and the joy of play. Community Room 2 signifies connectivity, serving as a place of travel and gathering for our ancestors. The kindergarten foyer is marked by the Warri (sea) and Wurdi Young (You Yangs) on one wall and yarning circles on the other. The yarning circles represent members of the community coming together and the profound learning that occurs through the connections of people from diverse backgrounds and generations. 

Chloe Chatterton is a proud Wadawurrung woman and First Nations artist. Her artistic practice is contemporary in nature and uses digital media to express her connection to culture and Country. The stories and teachings of her Wadawurrung heritage form the basis for her creative work, which explores places of significance and traditional symbolism. 

Protecting Country

Artist: Kent Morris (Barkindji)

Protecting Country acknowledges and pays respect to the continuous cultures of Wadawurrung people and all First Nations peoples from time immemorial to the present day. Combining forms associated with shield designs, the built environment, Waa the crow and the colours of Country, the work represents a merging of the past and the present, and centres Country as a place of knowledge and cultural exchange. 

The geometric patterning is inspired by reflections of the sky on water created by light and wind, and the markings on cultural materials from Wadawurrung Country and southeastern Australia. They represent interconnecting pathways and reaffirm connection to culture, family and community highlighting the ties that bind us together. They also evoke the journeys we take as individuals, families and communities and how our journeys are interconnected and part of a vast ongoing narrative.

Waa, the crow and ancestral creator spirit, watches over and carries the responsibility to protect our waterways. The importance of water and Sky Country to Wadawurrung people and other First Nations peoples is acknowledged through the colour palette. Water and sky express the ongoing connection between generations past, present and future by the transmission of knowledge and culture.

Kent Morris is a Barkindji artist living on Yalukit Willam Country in Naarm/Melbourne.  Central themes in his art practice are the connections between contemporary Indigenous experience and contemporary cultural practices and their continuation and evolution.
