Wyndham City’s Light Box project is back for a second year, bringing bold new artworks by local artists into public spaces and inviting the community to see the city through a different lens.
The Light Box Project celebrates the incredible talent of local artists while making contemporary art more accessible to our community. Placing these artworks in prominent public locations, we're encouraging residents to pause, reflect and experience Wyndham through different perspectives.
Featuring Naimo Omar, Ammar Yonis and Ayelet Brooks, the light project transforms public spaces into platforms for creative expression, inviting the community to experience new perspectives through art.
Each artist has created new artworks, displayed in illuminated lightboxes adorning the exterior walls of community facilities across Wyndham, the artworks bring contemporary art out of the gallery and into everyday public spaces where residents can engage with them as part of daily life.
The featured works each offer a unique lens on community, culture and belonging.
The artists’ diverse practices explore ideas of identity, place, culture and our connection to the world around us, creating thought-provoking works designed to be experienced beyond the gallery walls.
At Arndell Park Community Centre, Truganina, Naimo Omar's Isii Nafta explores themes of identity, belonging and self-expression through a practice informed by Somali culture and diaspora experiences.
At Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre, Ammar Yonis' As Long As I'm Near reflects on connection, memory and cultural continuity, drawing inspiration from the traditional woven baskets of the Harari people and the ways communities maintain ties to their heritage.
At Point Cook Community Learning Centre, Ayelet Brooks' Just a Wallflower brings her distinctive collage-based practice to the Light Box project, exploring memory, self-expression and the vibrant inner world that exists beneath a quiet exterior.
All artworks can be viewed by day and light up by night until June 30, 2027.
Together, the three artists offer a rich mix of perspectives and visual approaches, celebrating the diversity of Wyndham's creative community and encouraging audiences to engage with art in unexpected places.
Residents are encouraged to visit all three locations and discover each artist's unique perspective.
The Light Box Project is part of Wyndham City's commitment under its Public Art Plan to support local artists and bring contemporary art into the public realm.
