Double the lanes, new traffic lights and enhanced cycling connections – a $10.5 million upgrade of the Tarneit Road and Leakes Road intersection is now complete, paving the way for a much smoother commute.
This Connecting Wyndham priority project has delivered a duplicated intersection at Tarneit Road and Leakes Road, with extra lanes to cater for growing traffic and minimise traffic disruptions.
Work also included upgrading and installing new traffic lights to improve the flow of traffic, introducing both on-road and off-road cycling lanes to enhance cyclist safety and connectivity and resurfacing the Leakes Road service road between Penrose Promenade and Tarneit Road.
Wyndham City Mayor, Councillor Mia Shaw, said this vital upgrade would significantly improve turning capacity at this intersection as well as overall traffic flow, making it easier for the community to travel around Tarneit and neighbouring suburbs.
“Tarneit is one of our fastest-growing communities, and this upgrade is about making sure our road network keeps pace with that growth by delivering safer, smoother and more reliable journeys for residents every day,” Cr Shaw said.
“This project is the third major project delivered through our Connecting Wyndham program and the duplication of this intersection is a major step forward for connectivity in Wyndham, creating a safer and more efficient transport link for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike.”
“These upgrades are not just about adding lanes – they’re about improving how people move through our community, whether they’re driving to work, walking across the intersection or cycling to nearby destinations.”
“Meanwhile, planning is underway for an upcoming duplication of Leakes Road (Tarneit Road to Derrimut Road), with $15 million allocated in the 2026/27 Budget and construction expected to commence in late 2026.”
