Wyndham City reminds pool and spa owners that safety barriers and up-to-date certification of the barriers are a must all year round.

Pool and spa barriers are just one of the ways residents can work towards reducing the number backyard pool drownings in Victoria.

Pool/spa owners are required by State Government legislation to register their pools/spas and have them certified as safe by a registered inspector, a process that Local Government Councils oversee.

In Victoria, all swimming pools and spas capable of holding more than 30cm of water must be registered with Council, inspected every four years by a registered building practitioner and receive a Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance.

New pools or spas must be registered within 30 days of completion.

Property owners need to comply in a timely manner with a safety certification or are at risk of prosecution. Failure to comply with pool barrier requirements can have serious legal consequences, can result in substantial fines and possible prosecution.
