Wyndham residents have rejected the Victorian Government’s requirement that local councils roll out a separate glass-only kerbside service by July 2027.

They are among nearly 25,000 Victorians who have said they don’t want a costly fourth bin for glass recycling.

A statewide survey led by 35 councils found overwhelming opposition to the proposed, purple-lidded glass-only bin, with 83 per cent of respondents against its introduction.

The survey also found that 91 per cent support the expansion of the Container Deposit Scheme to include the collection of glass wine and spirit bottles.

Over 1,000 Wyndham City residents contributed to the survey. 92.7 per cent opposed adding the glass-only bin to the kerbside service and 90.1 per cent called for the Container Deposit Scheme to start taking glass wine and spirit bottles.   

It would cost Wyndham City about $5.8 million to supply and deliver bins, and an additional $1.9 million to provide the service in the first year, if a separate glass-only kerbside service took place as required by the Victorian Government.

The 35 councils have joined forces to call for a more practical, cost-effective solution and are urging the state government to reconsider the July 2027 deadline.

The Victorian Government has previously pointed to a business case on kerbside glass recycling to support its mandate. Councils are asking for this to be released to enable transparent comparison with the independent economic modelling commissioned by councils in 2025.
