Wyndham City's Security Patrol Trial in Truganina has wrapped up, with council now reviewing findings from the six-month program.

The trial launched in November with nightly patrols across public areas, business precincts and community facilities. It was designed to provide a visible after-hours safety presence, help deter anti-social behaviour, and ensure issues were recorded and referred to the right authorities.

Patrol officers logged a steady stream of incidents throughout the trial. Most were minor in nature, including proactive resident check-ins, small safety hazards and routine referrals. Where matters required escalation, they were reported to the appropriate authorities.

The research found that Truganina residents concerns about crime had declined significantly:

• Concern about crime in local neighbourhoods decreased by 37 per cent.
• Concern about violent crime decreased by 10 per cent.
• Concern about property crime decreased by five per cent.
• Concern about becoming a victim of crime elsewhere in Wyndham decreased by 41 per cent.

Perceptions of violent crime and property crime as major problems in local neighbourhoods also improved.

Benim Ward Councillor Preet Singh said the trial had provided important learnings for Council's broader community safety work. 

“The Truganina Security Patrol trial has provided valuable data and insights into community perceptions of safety, which will help inform Council’s ongoing work to improve community safety across Wyndham,” Cr Singh said.

“Importantly, the trial has provided Council with valuable, evidence-based data that will strengthen our advocacy to the Victorian Government for increased police resources in Wyndham. While Council has a role to play in supporting community safety, responsibility for policing and public safety ultimately rests with the State Government.”

“While community safety is a shared responsibility, residents can also play an important role by taking simple steps to protect their properties, such as locking doors and windows, securing vehicles, and closing garage doors.”

“One of the most encouraging outcomes of the trial was the strong sense of community it revealed. A significant majority of respondents said they felt confident they could turn to their neighbours for help if needed, highlighting the strong community connections that exist across Truganina.”

“Council will now carefully review the findings of the report and consider the next steps, including how the insights can be used to support future community safety initiatives and advocacy efforts.”
