Wyndham City is inviting residents to join transport, government and industry leaders for a discussion on the future of the proposed Outer Metropolitan Ring Road (OMR) and its role in supporting Melbourne's rapidly growing western region.
The forum, which will be held on Tuesday 27 October from 12pm to 1.30pm at Wyndham Civic Centre, will feature keynote presentations and a panel discussion examining the economic, freight and transport benefits of delivering the long-planned project.
As part of the A Way Forward for Wyndham campaign, Council is asking all political parties and candidates to commit to progressing the delivery of the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road as a critical investment in the future of Melbourne's west.
The Outer Metropolitan Ring is a proposed high-speed transport corridor linking Melbourne's north and west. The project would combine a freeway with rail infrastructure for interstate freight and future high-speed passenger services, creating a vital connection between key transport and employment hubs across Victoria.
The panel will feature:
- Eric Braslis, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Wyndham City
- Melissa Falkenberg, Manager Transport and Sustainability, Wyndham City
- Luke Donnellan, former Minister for Roads and Road Safety and former Minister for Ports
- Peter Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Transport Association
Wyndham City’s Mayor Cr Mia Shaw said the discussion comes at a pivotal time for Melbourne's west.
"As Melbourne's fastest-growing region, Wyndham continues to experience increasing pressure on our transport network with over half our residents commuting for more than one hour per day,” Cr Shaw said.
“The Outer Metropolitan Ring Road has long been identified as a critical piece of infrastructure needed to support future growth, improve freight efficiency and strengthen connectivity across the west and north of Melbourne."
"This forum will bring together experts from local government, transport planning and industry to explore the opportunities this project presents and why it remains an important priority for our region.”
Originally identified in the Victorian Transport Plan released in 2008, the OMR was included alongside major infrastructure projects such as the Metro Tunnel, West Gate Tunnel, North East Link, Peninsula Link and Regional Rail Link. While many of those projects have been completed or are nearing completion, the OMR remains the final major project from the plan yet to be delivered.
The proposed corridor would improve connections between Melbourne Airport, Avalon Airport, the Port of Geelong, the proposed Western Intermodal Freight Terminal and the proposed Bay West Port Precinct, while helping reduce congestion on local roads and supporting economic growth across Melbourne's west.
The forum will also consider the project's role in supporting future population growth and strengthening long-term transport planning for Victoria.
The event is open to the public to attend and will also be livestreamed.
The forum will be held on Tuesday 27 October from 12pm to 1.30pm at Wyndham Civic Centre. For more information and to register your attendance visit: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/omr
