Object to a planning permit

If there is a planning permit application for a property or site near you and you think your property or neighbourhood may be affected by the proposal, you can lodge an objection.

How to make an objection

To make an objection, you will need to find the planning permit in the list of applications on notification. You can search by address, application number or application type.

Once you have selected an application, click on the button with three dots and select 'Lodge a submission'.

See applications on notification

If you need more help finding your application in the portal, see How to make a submission on a planning proposal

Your submission will need to:

  • clearly explain the reason for the objection and how you would be affected if the permit was granted
  • be submitted before the date listed on the Public Notice.

If you want to withdraw your objection, you must do so in writing.

IMPORTANT: An objection to a planning permit application is a public document. In accordance with Section 57(5) of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 (PE Act) an objection must be made available for any person to inspect on request for the relevant period of time set out in the PE Act.

Electronic copies may also be made available to interested parties during this time.

Privacy considerations apply to the disclosure of personal information when making objections available.

Petitions

Petitions will be counted as a single objection. We will send any updates to the first person named in the petition, unless you provide an alternative contact person in the objection.

Objections we can’t consider

If we think your objection has been made primarily to secure or maintain a direct or indirect commercial advantage, we may reject it.

We also can’t consider objections that relate to:

  • the loss of a property’s value, unless it is an application for the removal or variation of a restrictive covenant
  • future residents who may occupy a development.

Outcome of objections

If we receive your objection before a decision has been made, we will keep you in the loop with the outcome of the planning permit application.
