The Sport and Recreation Healthy Eating in the West project aims to get more Wyndham and Melton sports clubs offering healthier food and drinks at their canteens, functions, events and on the field.  

Selected sporting clubs will be expected to sign a ‘Funding Agreement’ to confirm their commitment to participating in all aspects of the Project. This is the FINAL GRANT ROUND for the Project and ALL SUMMER AND WINTER CLUBS are invited to apply.

The commitment will include:

  • Attending a Sports Nutrition and Healthy Choices Workshop in November.
  • Providing a copy of the Clubs canteen/kiosk/event food and drink menu (if applicable)
  • A commitment to undertaking healthy changes as outlined in the various Funding Levels below
  • A commitment to attending at least 1-2 Healthy Sports Club Network Group Meetings depending of Funding Level (involving project update, sharing of ideas and experiences and providing support as required at various stages of the project).
  • Communication with the Sport and Recreation Healthy Eating in the West Project Officer as required via phone/email/face to face.
  • A commitment to actively participating in the evaluation of the Project which may include a face to face interview and/or online or written survey

The Sport and Recreation Healthy Eating in the West Project Office will provide support and training at the Sports Nutrition and Healthy Choices Workshop and at subsequent support networking groups. Clubs will be supported through the process to meet the milestones outlined below.  

There are three levels of funding available to clubs. Clubs are to select the level that suits them best.

Level 1 – Events, BBQs, Christmas functions, fundraising events, on the field

Grant amount: $200

Is suitable for Clubs that may hold one off events such as BBQs, lunches and fundraising events. This level is

suitable for Clubs that may not have a fully operational canteen. Clubs will be required to undertake the following:

  1. Implement a Healthy Eating Policy (templates provided)
  2. Make a minimum of three healthy food and drink changes  
  3. Promote and market the healthier food and drink options 

Level 2 – Operational canteen

Grant amount: $500

Clubs with operational canteens and ability to work through selected sections of the VicHealth Health Clubs Canteen Toolkit

  1. Implement a Healthy Eating Policy (templates provided)
  2. Complete menu assessment and classify food and drink items as red/amber/green
  3. Make a minimum of three healthy food and drink changes  
  4. Promote and market the healthier food and drink options 

Level 3 – Operational canteen

Grant amount: $800

Clubs with operational canteens and ability to work through all sections outlined in the VicHealth Health Club Canteen’s Toolkit including

  1. Implement a Healthy Eating Policy (templates provided)
  2. Complete menu assessment and classify food and drink items as red/amber/green
  3. Make a minimum of three healthy food and drink changes  
  4. Promote and market the healthier food and drink options 
  5. Complete canteen operation assessment and canteen financial assessment  
  6. Provide pre/post sales data including profit/losses

Additionally, Clubs at level 3 will need to provide a statement of commitment to working towards Standards outlined in the Healthy Choices: policy guidelines for sport and recreation centers including Standard 1 and a selection of standard 2.

Standard 1:  Foods and drinks provided in retail outlets and vending machines

  • At least 50% of foods and drinks available are GREEN
  • No more than 20% of foods and drinks available are RED

Standard 2:

  • GREEN foods and drinks are actively advertised and promoted and prominently displayed;
  • AMBER foods and drinks may be advertised and promoted, but not at the expense of GREEN choices;
  • RED foods and drinks are not advertised or promoted or displayed in prominent areas.

* Note that grant payments will be issued as follows

Level 1 – upon making changes outlined above (evidence of change will be needed e.g. photos, reflections, copy of healthy eating policy, outcomes etc.)

Level 2 & 3 - two payments to successful applicants with the first payment made upon signing of the ‘Funding Agreement’ and the final payment made following completion of all evaluation tasks at the end of the Project.
