Are you an experienced needleworker or a curious crafter? Wyndham City is excited to announce that we have secured ‘Needlepoint Rockstar’ Jessie Deane to collaborate with local crafters in the creation of an artwork.
Known for her handstitched imagery of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs, her urban scenes bring a contemporary lens to the traditional art of needlepoint. Deane’s practice is based in the subversion of needlepoint, contrasting the traditional and ‘feminine’ craft to the ‘masculine’ urban environments of her unconventional landscapes.
Take this opportunity to work with Jessie Deane, winner of the Melbourne Fringe Best Visual Arts Award in 2014; to evolve your crafting from domestic practice into a contemporary arts practice. Over the year learn new techniques, develop skills and get an insight into Jessie’s creative process at exclusive two-hour workshops where each participant will work on their own portion of collaborative artwork.
Once completed the work will be exhibited with an opening reception to celebrate the work, the community members who took part in its creation, and the acquisition of the work by Wyndham City to the Contemporary Art Collection.
Participants will be expected to attend all six workshops, one per month, from May – October. Workshops will be at the Old Shire Offices at 49 Watton Street, Werribee on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm.
