More young people in Wyndham will be turning the pages of books thanks to more than $33,000 received as part of the 2018-19 Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund.

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge is an annual program that provides public libraries with funding to purchase reading materials to support participation in the Challenge.

Wyndham City Portfolio Holder for Learning City, Cr Josh Gilligan said he was pleased that the Minister for Local Government, Marlene Kairouz confirmed the funding for Wyndham City Libraries.

“The Challenge which encourages children to read more, and promotes a love of reading making it such an important initiative; that’s why it’s great to receive this funding.” Cr Gilligan said.

“It is well known that regular reading from a young age is not only vital for success at school, it also has many lifelong benefits helping students to develop their academic, social and emotional skills.”

Since the Premiers’ Reading Challenge began more than 2.5 million young people have participated and over 45 million books have been read. During the 2017/18 more than 99,000 Premiers Reading Challenge items were borrowed from Wyndham City Libraries

“The competition encourages children of all ages to participate from prep to year 10,” Cr Gilligan said.
