Wyndham City Council is offering all budding writers a chance to show off their work at the Wyndham Writing Awards.

The Wyndham Writing Awards (previously Words of Wyndham) aims to inspire, encourage and recognise Victoria’s emerging literary artists.

Wyndham City’s Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio holder, Cr Tony Hooper, said Wyndham was a breeding ground for talented writers.

“We have some emerging writers making a name for themselves in our City and others whose creative genius is yet to be unleashed to the public. These awards offer a chance for fledgling writers to spread their wings and gain the attention they deserve,” Cr Hooper said.

Prizes will be awarded for unpublished works in four categories:

  • Short story.
  • Graphic short story.
  • Flash story.
  • Poetry.

Shortlisted entries will be published in the Wyndham Writing Awards Anthology 2019.

Council is excited to introduce two guest panellists this year: Central Victorian poet, novelist and short story writer Adam Ford, and Melbourne and Sydney based illustrator and comic maker Jess Kitty Parker.

To prepare for the awards, Wyndham City Council is offering two free workshops at the Plaza Library: one on creative writing with Vikki Petraitis from 10.30am to 1.30pm on 11 May and another on graphic short story writing with Bernard Caleo at 10.30am to 1.30pm on May 18. Booking for both workshops is essential. Book via the Library Event Calendar at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/libraries
