Garbage Collection Guidelines

garbage collection

In order to ensure your service is provided in the most efficient and effective manner (and to reduce your costs in the longrun), we ask that you:

  • place your bins out the night before for collection as late placed bins (placed after 6am) will not be collected.
  • Remove bins ASAP after it is collected to reduce the possibility of them being stolen or damaged.
  • Place your bins clear of trees, light & power poles, parked vehicles and vehicle driveways. Place bins 1m apart from each other and other objects and do not park your vehicles closer than 3.0m to the nearest bin. Bins not placed in this manner may not be picked up.
  • Do not over compact the waste in your bin so that it becomes jammed and difficult to empty from the bin. Jammed bins cause the drivers to excessively vibrate and hit your bins, leading to excessive noise pollution, damage to the bin, potential for spillage and other OH&S issues.
  • Do not overfill your bins so that the lid remains open. If you regularly have more waste than your current bin can handle, then contact Council for a second bin.
  • Residents should stay well clear of collection vehicles at all times. If you have an issue with regard to your service, please contact Council and avoid approaching the collection vehicles. If you cannot avoid approaching the collection vehicle, always try to remain in the driver’s line of sight and wait until the truck has stopped.
  • Advise small children not to play on the road, especially on collection days.
  • In court bowls, place bins on the straight section of the road prior to the bowl itself, wherever possible.
  • Park your vehicles so that there is enough room on the road pavement to allow trucks to pick up bins. This is especially the case for vehicles parked in court heads and for large vehicles parked on the road.
  • Do not use plastic bags or string in your greenwaste bin to avoid it becoming contaminated.
  • Ensure that your recycling bin and greenwaste bin are placed out on the correct day. Greenwaste and recycling bins are collected on alternate weeks and on the same day as your garbage collection. Check the recycling calendar to find out what day your collection is scheduled.

Items Collected

Items generally collected in this category include only domestic household waste. This includes nappies (bagged), broken glass (wrapped), vacuum dust (bagged), and ash (not hot ash - bagged).

Items NOT Collected

In order to be assured more confidently that your bin will not be left behind unemptied, please ensure that the following items are NOT included in your garbage bin.

  • No syringes
  • No oils, solvents, paint or flammable liquid
  • No building or renovation waste
  • No trade waste
  • No engine blocks or other large engine parts
  • No soil
  • Items intended for your greenwaste bin
  • Items intended for your recyclable bin
  • No liquid waste, and
  • No toxic, chemical or medical waste.

For those residents who do not have a greenwaste bin service, you are encouraged to take your greenwaste to landfill or wait until the biannual hard rubbish collection in April/May and October/November to have it removed. Council issues two free landfill coupons per year for residents choosing to use the landfill.

For general enquiries including missed collections, bin orders/replacement, residents should ring Council's Waste Management Unit on 9742 0765.
