What Wyndham is doing
Werribee River
Wyndham City’s water management activities have largely been driven through the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability Water Campaign. An outline of the ICLEI program, and the resulting Water Action Plan, is provided below.
This section also includes links to information on some of the activities Wyndham City have undertaken to reduce water consumption in both its operations, as well as in the wider community. Information is also presented on steps Wyndham City is taking to reduce human impact on the quality of our local waterways.
The Water Campaign
WCC joined the ICLEI Water Campaign in 2003. The Water Campaign is a milestone based program that provides local governments with a strategic and coordinated approach to water management. The Milestones for the Program are:
Milestone 1 Inventory of water consumption and water quality issues
Milestone 2 Establish goals for water conservation and improvement in water quality
Milestone 3 Develop a Local Action Plan
Milestone 4 Implement water conservation and water quality actions
Milestone 5 Monitor and report progress
There are 126 Australian councils that are participating in the Water Campaign. Wyndham City is currently working towards Milestone 5. In achieving Milestone 3, a local Water Action Plan was developed. Wyndham City was the first Victorian council west of Melbourne to complete a Water Action Plan.
Water Action Plan
The Wyndham Water Action Plan provides a context for the issues of water conservation and water quality in Wyndham. It sets directions for Council action regarding council and community water consumption, as well as the quality of local waterways.
The Plan was developed with consultation across Council as well as with City West Water, Melbourne Water and ICLEI.
Following a one month period of public exhibition, input was also received from a number of local environment groups including Parks Victoria, Werribee River Association, Werribee Waterways Management Committee (Riverrun), and the Friends of Skeleton Creek.
Financial assistance was also provided by Melbourne Water through the Sustainable Water Use Plans Program.
Wyndham’s Water Action Plan can be found below.
