According to the Australian Institute of Urban Studies (2004), on a per-person basis, Australians are the highest greenhouse gas (GHG) polluters in the world. This can be largely attributed to our heavy reliance on coal fired electricity generation, especially in Victoria.

The rapid increase in GHG in the atmosphere is now accepted to be a significant contributor to climate change, leading to more dramatic and varied weather conditions.

This section of the website provides information on the ‘greenhouse effect’, Council’s energy consumption; activities taken by Council to reduce emissions; and things that you can do to help.
