What Interment options are available?
The Wyndham cemetery Trust has a range of interment options to meet the various needs of the Wyndham Community. These options range from traditional monumental graves to a modern mausoleum complex. There are also a number of areas that have been developed for the interment and memorialisation of loved ones who have been cremated.
Please feel free to contact the Cemetery Coordinator to discuss your family requirements.
Can I sell my unused “Right of Interment” to another person?
Yes, but there are limits on this provision, so if you were contemplating such a transaction please discuss this with the Cemetery Coordinator before you entered into any agreement.
The Right of Interment can be transferred to another person upon the payment of an administration fee. The Wyndham Cemetery Trust is required to keep accurate records of the allocation of Rights of Interments so please notify the Trust so that they can amend the cemetery records.
Alternatively, the plot can be returned to the Trust and the Trust is obligated to refund the current fee less a cancellation fee.
Does the Werribee Cemetery have limited tenure on unused graves?
Yes. Division 5—Cancellation and Discontinuance of the Cemeteries & Crematoria Act 2003 makes this provision:
91. When can a cemetery trust cancel a right of interment?
(1) A cemetery trust may cancel a right of interment in a public cemetery for which it is responsible if—
(a) the right of interment has never been exercised; and
(b) the holder of the right of interment cannot be found after diligent inquiries.
(2) A cemetery trust must not cancel a right of interment referred to in sub-section (1) until the end of at least 25 years after the original grant of the right of interment.
The context of this provision is to enable Cemetery Trusts to better manage a valuable community asset. There is a fee involved for the renewal of the Right of Interment.
If you have any concerns about this provision of the Act please feel free to contact the Cemetery Coordinator to discuss.
If I want to arrange a pre-need plot, what should I do?
Firstly, it's advisable to go to the cemetery and look at what area you wish to purchase. Once you have chosen the area, phone the Cemetery Coordinator, who will arrange an appointment to meet with you and discuss your requirements.
How much do graves cost, and why aren't they priced the same all over?
For the applicable fees for “Right of Interment” please refer to The Wyndham Cemeteries Trust Scale of fees for Werribee & Truganina Cemeteries.
The Wyndham Cemeteries Trust has endeavoured to develop a facility to meet the needs of the Wyndham Community, in order to achieve this, some areas are more “presentable” than other areas and this will affect the continued up keep of the area hence a different fee will be charged to reflect these additional expenses.
The Wyndham Cemeteries Trust has an obligation to perpetually maintain the cemeteries that are entrusted to its care for the community good. The Trust has to do this without Government funding or burdening the Wyndham community so it is basically a “user pay” operation and that is why it may seem to be expensive.
