There is an ongoing misconception with many people that a Building Permit and Planning Permit are one and the same. This is not the case and it is important to differentiate between the two.
The Planning Department is responsible for administering the Planning & Environment Act 1987 and Wyndham Planning Scheme while also being responsible for issuing planning permits for various uses of buildings and developments within the municipality.
The Building Department is responsible for administering the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2006. This involves ensuring buildings are safe for the occupants and structurally sound.
Where a Planning Permit is required, it is generally issued prior to a Building Permit as the planning approval of the building commonly relates to the use, location, and appearance of a building where as the Building Permit relates to the structural and occupant safety of the building.
Council's Engineering Services manages plans and provides advice on Council's infrastructure including its road and drainage networks and new subdivisions.
