Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge

The proposed Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge will span over the Werribee River from the Wedge Street car park (corner Wedge St & Watton St) into Wyndham Park.

Costs
The expected construction cost $2.4 million.

Start Date
Construction is expected to commence early 2009.

Design Features (design by WMCQ Architects)

  • The bridge features a solid curved design with 'crazed' orange pattern on the side and on the support beams.
  • The bridge deck will consist of patterned, coloured concrete and an anti-slip surface and galvanised balustrade, handrails and stairs.
  • It is proposed that lighting will be installed in the handrail along the bridge length to light the bridge deck. Additional feature lighting will be provided at key locations.
  • The curved staircase will be provided mid-way on the northern side of the bridge to allow an extra entry and exit point closer to the river bank.
  • The bridge will widen at the staircase where a curved solid wall will be constructed to provide additional interest to the structure and wind protection.
  • Disabled access will be provided at both ends of the bridge.

Structural Design

  • Council has engaged Hyder Consulting Pty Ltd to prepare structural design plans for the bridge.
  • The design is expected to be completed by late 2008.

Environmental Impacts

  • The hand rail lighting and feature lighting, is proposed to provide minimal disturbance to the wildlife in the park.
  • A flora and fauna report has been prepared for the site and recommendations will be followed during construction to minimise disturbance and damage to the existing environs.
  • An archaeological study has been prepared for the site and a Cultural Heritage Management Plan has been approved by Aboriginal Affairs Victoria.
