Wyndham's Kids Get Active
Wyndham’s primary schools are being invited to take part in the Active Kids program, which encourages children to keep fit and healthy.
The program, for children in Wyndham’s Schools aged 8-10, aims to educate families about the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyle choices and encouraging participation in local recreation and leisure activities.
The program produces resources for participants and families including Active Kids passports, newsletters, calendars, school activity days, program rewards and the Active Kids website.
Truganina Ward Councillor Bob Fairclough said the program would have both short term and long term benefits.
“The Active Kids program gets children into good habits early and encourages them to incorporate sport and healthy eating into their everyday life,” Cr Fairclough said.
“Over the long term, it’s hoped that this will create a much healthier generation and reduce impacts on our health services.”
“By using activities, rewards and getting the whole community involved, the program makes keeping fit and healthy fun, and means children are much more likely to form healthy lifelong habits.”
“Since Wyndham City started this program in 2007, over 5,000 children from 21 schools have taken part with great success. It is now a real partnership with local sports groups and health services joining the program.”
“I encourage any schools who haven’t already taken part to contact Wyndham City and complete an expression of interest form.”
The Active Kids program is a partnership between Wyndham City and Belgravia Leisure, ISIS Primary Care, Netball Victoria, Rebel Sport, Tennis Victoria, Volleyball Victoria, Werribee Hockey Club, Werribee Football Club and YMCA.
The 2012 Active Kids program begins on April 23rd.
