Werribee Fountain Springs To Life Again

08.02.2012

The water is flowing once again on one of Werribee’s best known sculptures, with the Untitled Fountain on Watton Street being refilled this week.

The Fountain, which was installed in 2000, was turned off 5 years ago during water restrictions.

The work was designed by artist Helen Bodycomb and is a stainless steel, inverted red gum tree root system.

Wyndham Mayor Cr Kim McAliney said turning on the fountain was symbolic of the current regeneration of the Werribee City Centre.

“There’s so much going on in the Werribee City Centre right now, from the construction of the Wedge Street Bridge to the opening of the Piazza,” Cr McAliney said.

“Switching on this fountain will further improve the amenity of Watton Street and will add to what is already a very vibrant shopping strip.”

“Improvements mean the water in the fountain now recirculates and is much more water efficient.”

“This fountain reflects the close relationship between the City Centre and the Werribee River and Wyndham Park and reminds people that only metres away from the shopping and eating establishments is a beautiful natural landscape.”

“This fountain is part of Wyndham’s extensive public art collection, which includes well known works like the Seeds of Change sculpture on the Werribee turn off from the Princes Highway, to temporary, moveable art like our Pop Ups, inflatable artworks.”

The untitled fountain is on the corner of Watton and Wedge Streets in Werribee.
