Look After Your Vacant Land

16.02.2012

Wyndham City is urging residents to maintain vacant land, with inspections due to take place across the coming weeks.

Wyndham City has written to all vacant land owners to remind them of their obligations under Wyndham Local Law 16.

Land owners have been reminded they are responsible for maintaining both the safety and cleanliness of their land and for reducing fire and health hazards.

Wyndham Mayor, Cr Kim McAliney, said the aim of the local law is to ensure appropriate maintenance of vacant land to improve the overall presentation of the City, while minimising potential health and safety risks.

“Our aim is to promote the City as a clean and well presented place to live and visit – our preference is not to issue infringements but to remind land owners of their obligations,” she said.

“We’ve asked land owners to inspect their property regularly and to maintain grass and undergrowth to a height of no more than 150mm and land clear of any fire hazard, noxious weeds, litter or rubbish.”

“This is a year-round responsibility, and Wyndham City is currently inspecting to ensure land owners comply.”

“Owners who do not comply may be fined $250 and will be required to clean up their properties within a specified time. If the works are not done on time, Council will do the clean up and land owners will be required to pay. These costs could be up to $2,000.”

“Public safety is important, and so is maintaining a City we can all be proud of.”
