Fluorocycle For Free

01.02.2012

Recycle your spent fluorescent tubes and energy saver light globes (CFLs) for FREE as part of Wyndham City’s Light Globe Recycling Program.

CFLs and other fluorescent light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing and the phosphor powder lining

This mercury has the potential to cause humans harm if not disposed of correctly.

Chaffey Ward Councillor, Marcel Mahfoud, who is a representative on the Metropolitan Waste Management Group, said recycling prevents the release of mercury into the environment and reduces this risk.

“Recycling also allows the glass, metal and other materials that make up the lightbulbs to be reused and virtually all the components can be recycled.”

“Wyndham City became a FluoroCycle Commercial User in 2011, so all light bulbs used by Council are recycled. We audit our processes every year and in 2010-11 Wyndham City recycled 59kg of CFLs.”

“Wyndham City is also a FluoroCycle Facilitator committed to helping the community recycle light bulbs. A further 689kgs were collected from households, which is a fantastic result.”

“The recycling station in the foyer of the Wyndham City Civic Centre also allows residents to bring in mobile phones and their accessories, domestic printer cartridges, household batteries, CDs and DVDs to be recycled.”

“So make a visit part of your commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
