New Place for Wyndham's Older Residents

30.06.2011

Wyndham City has taken the first step in creating a hub for our older residents, with the contract for architectural design services awarded at Monday night’s Council meeting.

Terence Carey Architects have been awarded the $544,500 contract to design the Penrose Promenade Community Hub in Tarneit Gardens.

While the exact details have yet to be outlined, the Centre will feature:

Truganina Ward Councillor Kim McAliney said the new Centre would be an asset to Wyndham’s older residents.

“This Centre will allow us to run a number of programs and services that maximise independence in Seniors and increase opportunities for them to socialise, learn new skills and keep active,” Cr McAliney said.

“The architectural design of this Centre is the first step in the construction of a State of the Art community facility.  Wyndham City allocated the funds for architectural design in the 2010/2011 budget, with $1.3 million outlined in the 2011/2012 budget for construction works and a further $10 million to be considered in the 2012/2013 and 2013/14 budgets.”

“Just like the rest of Wyndham’s population, the number of older people in our community is rising, meaning we are fast outgrowing the Central Park Community Centre, which is where our Aged and Disability Services Department and a number of our programs and services are currently located. In 2011, there are almost 17,000 people aged 60 and over living in Wyndham, with this figure expected to rise to over 31,000 by 2021.”

“Wyndham City’s Aged and Disability Services team provide a range of services to support people living with disabilities and frail older people who choose to stay living at home, including in-home support and social support programs.
